90 is also talking out of its ass. Colombia would never go for a defensive coach like CQ.

'30 players to test for the 23 Asian Cup spots'. A detailed look at 30 players who deserve a call up into Iran's preliminary 2019 Asian Cup Squad. Notable new inclusions include Younes Delfi, Payam Niazmand, and Reza Asadi.

                https://iranfootballscout.wixsite.co...sian-Cup-spots

As the Asian Cup approaches, it is time for Carlos Queiroz to begin selecting a preliminary squad that can then be narrowed down. The Asian Cup squad should be selected with two main criteria: players who will help Iran win the title and players who can begin to transition into Team Melli for the 2022 World Cup. The latter criteria is secondary to winning the cup itself, but when it comes to squad depth, opting for a younger player rather than a player past their prime will help build squad chemistry from early on. The youth can learn a few things from the older players and begin gelling together with their future team mates. The invitation of youth to this preliminary squad can also motivate them to continue bettering themselves so that they can make the final squad for this and future tournaments.

Onto the squad itself, the four goalkeepers who should be called in are Alireza Beiranvand(25), Amir Abedzadeh(25), Syed Hossein Hosseini(26), and Payam Niazmand(23). Beiranvand has cemented himself as the starter for Iran, and his quality at the 2018 World Cup showed that he is capable as a shot stopper for Team Melli. Despite being the current starter, competition is what Beiranvand needs to further improve. The second in line for the position should be Amir Abedzadeh. Amir Abedzadeh, son of Iran legend Ahmad Reza, has been a late bloomer for club and country. Despite his unconventional introduction to professional football, Amir has been making a name for himself in the Portuguese first division. The goalkeeper has cemented himself as starter for Maritimo, where he has averaged one goal conceded per game, with a few clean sheets along the way. The third choice goalkeeper should be Syed Hossein Hosseini. The Esteghlal goalkeeper has made a name for himself and earned a few call ups to Team Melli camps. He has shown that he has the quality to be a backup for Iran, and would be trustworthy to step into goal if need be. The final goalkeeper who should be selected is Payam Niazmand. The young Sepahan goalkeeper has had a great start to the season with only two goals conceded in four games, including two clean sheets. The young goalkeeper has the potential to step up in the next few years and potentially challenge for the World Cup Squad in 2022.

Next up, the fullbacks would compromise of Milad Mohammadi(24), Ehsan Hajsafi(28), Saeid Aghaei(23), Ramin Rezaeian(28), Omid Noorafkan(21), and Sadegh Moharrami(23). Many of the fullbacks are versatile in that they can play more advanced positions or in the central midfield if called upon. The versatility is key to depth as Hajsafi and Noorafkan can play either as left back or in midfield if need be. Rezaeian and Aghaei can both play advanced positions on their respective wings. Wing play and crossing are central to Iran's counter attacking style, making players with those qualities even more valuable. The mix of players in their prime and up and coming talents combines into a formidable preliminary squad.

In Central Defense, calling up Majid Hosseini(22), Morteza Pouraliganji(26), Rouzbeh Cheshmi(25), Mohammad Reza Khanzadeh(27), and Mohammad Naderi(21). As a defensively sound team, the centerbacks play a pivotal role in breaking down the attacks of the other team. Team Melli's defense was amazing during the 2018 World Cup, with the three center backs featuring(Pouraliganji, Hosseini, and Cheshmi) all playing well. The Hosseini-Pouraliganji centerback duo appears to be the best set up for Iran going into this tournament and perhaps the next world cup. The two already have played a few matches together and both have skill sets which compliment each other. Cheshmi was a surprise in his start against Morocco, as he had issues in a friendly against Turkey weeks before. Decent league performances warrant another call up for the Cheshmi. Khanzadeh is decent enough for squad depth, but is not ideal to be starting for Team Melli, making him a reserve player. Mohammad Naderi's move to Belgian side Kv Kortrijk warrants a call up, as he will have been training at a higher level for six months and hopefully receiving some game time. The young centerback is yet to feature for his side, but has made the bench.

Moving onto midfielders, players deserving call ups include Saeid Ezatolahi(21), Omid Ebrahimi(30), Mehdi Torabi(23), Reza Shekari(20), Farshid Esmaili(24), Reza Asadi(22). The Ezatolahi-Ebrahimi double pivot worked well to break down attacks and win midfield battles during the World Cup. The two will probably be starting at the Asian Cup. They can be compliments by more attacking minded players in Torabi and Shekari. Torabi has been a regular squad player for Team Melli for some time and can play as a left winger if called upon, and Shekari's growth in Russia deserves a call up. Domestic based midfielders Esmaili and Asadi should be tried out, as their performances have improved greatly in the Iranian domestic league the past few years.

Next up, Wingers who deserve call ups are Alireza Jahanbakhsh(25), Vahid Amiri(30), Younes Delfi(17), Mehdi Taremi(26), and Ali Gholizadeh(22). An ideal wing set up would have Jahanbakhsh on the right and Amiri on the left. Amiri's performance at the World Cup was immense; so much so that as a 30 year old he received an offer and moved to Trabzonspor in Turkey. Both of these players are workhorses who can trackback when need be. Mehdi Taremi has scored many goals for Iran, playing as both a wide forward and winger. Taremi's ability to play centrally or wide makes him an asset through versatility. Ali Gholizadeh came with the team to the World Cup, but was not apart of the 23 player roster. Gholizadeh has quickly settled in Belgium for his club Charleroi and is giving Jahanbakhsh some stiff competition on the right. Gholizadeh is also a versatile player who can play a more advanced or defensive role if called upon. Lastly, young talent Younes Delfi should be called up as he is on the verge of a big European move and has shown that his age doesn't define his experience. Delfi has been a regular at his club for over a year now and as a 17 year old plays for the u23 Iran side. Delfi could be a good super sub against a weaker opponent in the Asian Cup.

Lastly, forwards who should be called up are Kaveh Rezaei(26), Karim Ansarifard(28), Saman Ghoddos(24), and Ali Alipour(23). Assuming Azmoun stays retired, Rezaei should be given the starting role up top. Rezaei scored 19 goals and recorded 6 assists for Charleroi this past year before moving to champions league team Club Brugge. Rezaei is involved in build up play and can shift wide if need be. Ghoddos is an amazing forward who can play anywhere up top or even in central midfield. He is crucial to Team Melli and should be starting next to the striker. Ansarifard is a long time servant of national team and is a great player off the bench. Similarly, Alipour's recent year in Iran's domestic league warrants another invite to a camp to be tested.

There are some notable omissions from the list. Sardar Azmoun has emphasized his retirement, but would make the squad should he decide to unretire. Ashkan Dejagah has expressed his interest to play in the Asian Cup, and Queiroz tends to call up favorable veterans regardless of their match fitness. Previous Team Melli regulars Ali Karimi and Mohammad Mazaheri don't make the cut as a result of more favorable alternatives.

The Asian Cup is fast approaching, and while the final squad may be almost identical to the World Cup squad, there is still time for smart substitutions to take place. While winning the Asian Cup should be the priority, the tournament also serves as a potential landmark to build a team for the 2022 World Cup. The Iranian team is young at its core, and the more playtime these youth get together, the better the team chemistry will be moving forward.

                All 30 players:

                Goalkeepers:
                Alireza Beiranvand(25)

                Mehdi Taremi(26)
                Ali Gholizadeh(22)

                Reza Asadi(22)
We are currently witnessing a revolution in Iranian football. Team Melli has never been stronger than it is today, and we will only get better.

Interesting and great list Javid Jaan- personally, given CQ’s final fling, the only chance for silverwar and the very high expectation on him and TM to win the tournament, I very much doubt he will take the very young lads, he will take the “tried and tested” World Cup squad bar Azmoon.

This is a tournament in which I think we really need Azmoun however, if he decides not to come it's his own decision and we cannot fault him for that!

I don’t want him ever allowed to return to TM ..!
Not to mention I also couldn’t give a flying fk what happens to him @ club level either.

                          Good post. Thank you.

I think Naderi is not going to be called, we know that moving to Europe is not an automatic ticket to TM. He has great potential yet he is not even on Kortrijk's roster on a regular basis and he has a long way before he can show that he is TM material. I opt for Ansari (PP) instead. Also, Delfi is not at TM level yet, he has great potential and he has done amazing for his young age of 17 yet he needs to finalize his move to PSV Eindhoven and then show that he is ready for the senior level. He is definitely a serious prospect for 2022. I rather call Tabrizi (Esteghlal) instead. Other than that, I like your list and I think Shekari and Moharrami are the two young prospects who could really shine for us as early as AC 2019.

I think Ryan Tafazolli should be called up as a back up for the Asian Cup. He's been doing great, starting and playing full games week in week out for Peterborough. His team is also currently first in the league and on track to promote to the Championship. He may not be amazing, but he should be good enough for Asian level competition

He should have been tested a long time ago hopefully with the performance of his team they will consider it more seriously. I wouldn’t be surprised if beitashour will get a shot to prove himself too being MLS is out of season even though at the moment we are loaded with fullbacks in Milad Mo, rezaeian, Hajsafi, and moharami (its almost certain he will get a chance would be a shock if he doesn’t). Time will tel but more than anything I want ryan tested out in a friendly
