Uli Stielike has been fired as South Korea's head coach

ULI Stielike has been fired as South Korea’s head coach after poor results in World Cup qualifying.

South Korea’s football association made the announcement Thursday, two days after a 3-2 loss in Qatar. It was South Korea’s third defeat in the last five qualification games and left hopes of progressing to a ninth successive World Cup uncertain.

Strangely, it means this clash cost both managers their jobs, with Qatar boss Jorge Fossati quitting after the win.

The Uruguayan’s decision to quit after less than a year in charge took the Qatar Football Association by surprise and his resignation has yet to be accepted. Qatar President Hamad Bin Khalifa Bin Ahmed Al-Thani said Spanish under-23 team coach Felix Sanchez would take over if Fossati could not be persuaded to stay on, Doha-based TV station Al-Kass reported.

As hosts of the 2022 World Cup finals, the Qataris were desperate to qualify for next year’s tournament in Russia but have managed just two wins and a draw in eight matches in the third round of Asian qualifying.

Even after Tuesday’s impressive victory, secured by Hasan Al Haydos’s winner 16 minutes from time, Qatar need to make up three points on third-placed Uzbekistan in Group A with only two matches remaining.

As for South Korea, the KFA did not immediately announce a replacement.

“Since coming in 2014, he has worked hard for the development of Korean soccer,” said Lee Yong-soo, chairman of the KFA’s technical committee.

“But results in qualification for the World Cup have not been what we wanted.”

With two games remaining in Group A - and the top two progressing to the World Cup automatically - South Korea is in second place with a one-point margin over third-place Uzbekistan and only four points clear of fourth-place Syria.

dameshoon garm they made the right choice. They had a nice run in the 2015 AC but aside from that they have struggled to be their usual selves since 2012 and he was not getting them back on track. He should have been fired a long time ago after that disgraceful press conference in Tehran

I would love to see us eliminate S. Korea much like they did to us back in 2010

We must defeat Korea if we are to be taken seriously at the world cup.

Many coaches are "available" for the TM job, but the issue is with sanctions, no foreign coach can be paid. Unless they would like their salary in gold/rugs/peste/khaviar, there's not much we can do to entice new coaches.

Doubt in this situation any foreign coach will want to come to Iran. Not for all the tea in China.

Time to appoint Daei or Golmohammadi and get going.

Never mind, for 2019 his team only finished 7th in the Chinese domestic league with 41 points. (The top team had 72.)

This guy sucked why would we ever want him? I’d pick Daei over him. No foreign coach will come to Iran now anyway
