As already mentioned in the PFDCTV Thread, new ideas will be added to our channel and GOAL OF THE MONTH is one of those.

I will use the last months of this year as a kind of "experiment" to see if this new addition really works.
If yes, then next year we will start from the first month and at the end of the year we can even have a "Goal of the YEAR". Also the nominations will be shown on the front page, as well as on our channel, so that everybody can vote, for now only forum members can do that.

Note:
I know 20 nominations might be a lot but do not forget the fact that August was like a "IPL marathon" and many matches were played during a very short time, unfortunately I even had to remove some nice goals.

POLL WILL BE CLOSED IN 1 WEEK!

Let the voting begin!:D

The FIBA World Championships are for the big boys, not the kiddies. While there are a handful of young players dotting the rosters of the 24 teams that competed in the tournament, for the most part countries rely on their older, more experienced players when they are battling on such a big stage. But, as mentioned, a few young bucks did make the cut for their respective natiRobert Sacreons this year and got to join in on the festivities in Turkey. Here are the top NBA Draft prospects that made the grade in Turkey.

Robert Sacre — Canada

The world championships were an utter disaster for Canada, as they failed to win even one game (no, they couldn’t even beat Lebanon). Things weren’t much better personally for Robert Sacre either, as the highly touted center barely got off the bench, only averaging 8 minutes a game. But he did produce when he was given an opportunity for a little extra burn, notching 8 points and 3 boards in 14 minutes versus Spain. In the fall, Sacre will be back on Gonzaga’s campus for his junior season with the ‘Zags. His size (7-0), physicality, defensive ability and decent athleticism should allow him to sneak into the second round of the NBA Draft whenever he decides to declare for it.

Bojan Bogdanovic — Croatia

Croatia had a much better opening round than Canada, going 2-3 and making it through to the round of 16, where they’ll meet Serbia on Saturday. Young small forward Bojan Bogdanovic was a big reason for the team’s success, as he went off for double-digit scoring totals in four out of their five games so far (including 17 points and 5 threes versus the US). The 6-8, 21-year-old, who plays pro ball for Cibona Zagreb in his native Croatia, is a three-point marksmen, hitting his long-range shots at a 50 percent clip (13-26) thus far in Turkey. Known for his strong all-around game, Bogdanovic should be a mid-second round pick next June.

Elias Harris & Robin Benzing — Germany

The Dirk Nowitzki-less German squad underachieved in the first round and didn’t advance to the round of 16, which is too bad because they have a couple of good draft prospects in Elias Harris and Robin Benzing. Harris will be familiar to most readers due to the solid freshman season he had for Gonzaga last year. The long-limbed, athletic small forward didn’t do much in Turkey, only putting up 3.4 ppg and 2.0 rpg despite playing about 17 minutes a game. But another strong season with Gonzaga could put him into the lottery next June. Teammate Benzing wasn’t much more effective himself, averaging 4.6 ppg in 18 minutes of action per game. The 6-10 small forward, who plays pro for Ratiopharm Ulm in Germany, runs the floor well and is a three-point bomber, taking more threes than twos. He should be a second round pick in 2011.

Arsalan Kazemi — Iran

Could the unthinkable happen — Could we really see two Iranian basketball players in the NBA at the same time? It is appearing to be very possible, as Arsalan Kazemi is on NBA scouts’ radar. A 6-7 combo forward with long arms, Kazemi had a great showing in Turkey, averaging 12.0 ppg and 7.4 rpg. The Rice sophomore still has plenty of work to do before he starts appearing on any mock drafts, but he is an athletic, high energy player that could turn out to be a solid NBA role player before all is said and done.

The score is 1-1! that was a team Iran beat 2-0! I'm not saying we are better then Paraguay but the fact we beat china and they didn't shows that our 2-0 victory was a good one, even more so when you see the performance we put in.

Now we have also beaten S.Korea, Agreed, it is a friendly, but still, to beat two of Asia's better teams with a 3 goal deficit, and both away from home without conceding is a very very good start to our preparation for the Asian cup.

We have a nice blend of youth and experience in this team, with a little bit more work, and with a strong and solid foundation we could have a real shot at winning the competition.

I hope we do, i would like to see people lay off the players and tactics and be happy with 2 wins out of 2, no goals conceded and both away from home....

First half:

I assume what a kid takes out of this half is very different from what someone who actually observes the game.

It is a good thing we are facing the main team of south korea, which provides a very RARE opportunity to see TM play against a decent team. Therefore, TM is forced to show its true capabilities in attack and defense.

ATTACK:
And true to form, we see in attack we are quite weak as when we have the ball we are either over-passing the ball between the defenders and within our half 90% of the time, and if we try to move into the Korean half, it is always through the age-old useless LOBS from defenders, which usually don’t end up in our favor! Beyond this the team has proven incapable of penetrating the Korean half with proper passing! So much that in long periods of the game the Korean keeper was just a spectator from afar!!!!! :(

Our goal also is not the result of some highly masterful tactics, rather it is a true GIFT from the opponent for failing to pass stronger which fell to Pejman Nouri who had the presence of mind to attack the player. This only proved ghotbi is a very lucky coach … perhaps by becoming a “seyed” recently ;)

DEFENSE:
On the other side, our defense has been penetrated again and again. Both through aerial balls and crosses (corners included), where most of the first balls are headed by the Koreans inside our 18, and on the ground, especially from our left flank, they have done whatever they wanted to do, passing, overtaking, dribbling, one-twos, …. Etc!!!

We may end the half 1-0 up. But team performance wise, we are way WAY behind the opponents and this kind of play just doesn’t inspire any sort of hope for us

But it’s not all negative. The positive thing I saw was that the Koreans after the goal lost some of their composure and focus. They didn’t have the same smooth passing or penetration anymore. Koreans still haven regained their focus and the game is more balanced now. Which begs the question: are they so vulnerable to shock? This could play in our favor.
Could it be that they got surprised by the goal or falling behind? Whatever it may be, this could be exploited.

Haven’t watched the second half yet and will address it once I watch it.
But I suspect it will be a bit more balanced game with more Koreans attacking but TM looking for counters … naturally. If only we don’t pull back too much, allowing too much space.
Lets see.

************----------*************

Second half :

After watching the 2nd half, I must first say I am happy (sort of) that our defense didn’t buckle under that last 15-17 minutes of pressure by the Koreans. Yes, rahmati was called into action as well as a few more instances where their shots went wayward, but overall, we didn’t concede and that is good news.

But until this period, which is from minute 46-72/73, the game was a very scrappy football with lots of middle of the park sk!rmishes. nothing to write home about … except the two opportunities we got at minute 46 and the other shojaei shot. Both chances would have been more dangerous if they had taken a stronger strike at the ball.

Shojaei, very much like ghotbi, is a very lucky chap too. He had a very regular and quite forgettable game (like majority of his other TM games) except his goal. except this one instance, he was slow and in the second half, lost the ball on many occasions. Maybe if he wasn’t used on the left flank, he’d have been more efficient.
I really don’t know why ansarifard was brought out. It just doesn’t make sense as he wasn’t injured. Nor was he playing bad. So a very peculiar decision by ghotbi, who brought oladi who didn’t do half of what ansarifard did anyway!!!

Ando was very active, just like pejman. But again, having 3 defensive mids made the team very poor in creativity dept. . no wonder the team didn’t look very exciting going forward. The few chances we had were mere SPARKS rather than off rehearsed, coordinated moves.
Jalal hosseini did well on many occasions and actually prevented a goal in 1st half (don’t know how aware he was in that shot, though). So was nosrati on the right side. But we already knew this about nosrati that his best games are when he plays in the center or if not, then on the right side. His weakest performances were ALWAYS on the left side. So no surprises here.

TM still shows extremely poor in shooting and long rangers. And there seems no remedy for this basic foundation of football. What’s sad is that we have plenty of shooters like nekounam, nouri, … who CAN take shots, but don’t (due to some peculiar reason!)

Anyway, we got a win in south korea after so many years and lets hope we can build on this in asia cup, if we face the Koreans in quarters.
