Kuala Lumpur: Japan have won the AFC Fair Play Association of the Year having accumulated more Fair Play points than any other member association, with the East Asians amassing 425.26 points, 53.58 points more than closest challenger China.

Fair Play points are given to all national and club teams participating in AFC competitions and in addition to the number of red and yellow cards received in a match points are calculated on positive play, conduct on and off the field and the behaviour of the team’s fans.

China were runners-up with 371.68 while Iran were third with 362.65 points.

Japan’s disciplined approach to the game from their national teams saw them win the Fair Play prize in both the men’s and the women’s categories at last year’s AFC Annual Awards.

Adherence to the ‘Fair Play’ mantra is a hallmark of football in the Land of the Rising Sun and having, amongst other things, a lower average of red and yellow cards per match than any other association is a source of pride.

Japan Football Association President Junji Ogura, who collected the award from AFC Vice President Zhang Jilong, said: “It is a great honour to be selected for this award.

“To be frank, I wanted to win this award because of the prestige attached with it. This award will motivate our players to play more in the spirit of fair play which is so important in football.”

Oh come on they should of at least given the best Asian club award to Zob Ahan. Seriously compare the budget of Zob Ahan to Seongnam Ilhwa or someone else we beat Al Ain. Oh and I highly doubt that Bin Hammel is going to give any real love to Iran. Man this sucks.

I LOVE IRAN!

Kuala Lumpur: Sasa Ognenovksi’s glee on winning the most coveted award in Asian football was tempered on a day his team Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma lost in the K-League play-off to Jeonbuk Motors and frittered the last chance they had of playing in next year’s AFC Champions League.

It was Ognenovksi’s standout performance in the AFC Champions League 2010, where he was named MVP for the tournament, that saw him win the AFC Player of the Year award.

“It is definitely not a great day for the team,” lamented Ognenovksi, 31. “We have failed to qualify for the AFC Champions League. Now we have to try and play well next year (in the K-League).”

The Aussie won the title ahead of fellow nominees Husain Salman Maki, of Bahrain, Iranians Farhad Majidi and Farshid Talebi and Bader Al Motawaa, of Kuwait.

The race for the title was too close to call points-wise but Ognenovski shaded it because of his performances with ACL-winning Seongnam.

When asked if the win would help him cement a place in the national team, Sasa said: “I really hope so. I had a brief chat with Holger Osieck (Australia head coach) who is attending the awards. Now that he has seen me win the award maybe I am guaranteed to play…pretty much!”

The Seongnam skipper said that the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup would be his main focus.

Al Mutawa missed out on the honour in 2006 by finishing second to Qatar’s Khalfan Ibrahim. He started his career as a youth player with Al Qadsia and joined the senior team in 2003.

The 25-year-old played a key role in Al Qadsia’s progress to the semi-final of the 2006 AFC Champions League and this year when they finished runners-up in the AFC Cup this year.

Majidi, of Esteghlal, is one of the best known faces of Iran football. His side failed to cross the last 16 hurdle in the 2010 AFC Champions League but Majidi stood out with his performance.

Talebi, of ACL runners-up Zob Ahan, was rock solid in defence as his club defied the odds and made it to the summit clash where they lost to Korea’s Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma 3-1.

Al Riffa player Salman’s brilliant efforts saw his team reach the semi-finals of the 2010 AFC Cup before going down to Al Qadsia. He was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

The 27-year-old midfielder scored twice as Al Riffa won 5-3 at Da Nang in Vietnam in the second leg of the quarter-finals. He was also on target in a 4-1 defeat to Al Rayyan and in their 3-1 victory over South China during the group stage.

More on the awards:

AFC Futsal Player of the Year: Mohammad Taheri

Iranian Mohammad Taheri was named AFC Futsal Player of the Year, beating previous winner Vahid Shamsaee and Uzbek Rustam Umarov to the grand prize.

Prolific striker Taheri scored 13 goals in helping Iran to the AFC Futsal Championship 2010, a feat that earned him the Most Valuable Player prize.

“I am very happy to come here among some of the biggest names of Asian football,” said Taheri after receiving the award from AFC ExCo member Hussein Saeed. “This award will help me to aim for more success.

“I will not rest after getting this award. It will only help me get a better player.

“I am winning this award after Vahid Shamsaee, one of the greatest players of futsal. I am happy to win it after him.”

Umarov was the Uzbekistan goalkeeper as the Central Asians finished runners-up to Iran in the AFC Futsal Championship 2010.

Iran’s Shamsaee, one of the greatest Asian futsal players of all time, inspired Foolad Mahan Sepahan to the inaugural AFC Club Futsal Championship 2010 title.

He was also named as the tournament Most Valuable Player.

AFC Futsal Team of the Year: Iran

Kuala Lumpur: Iran have won the AFC Futsal Team of the Year Award in recognition of their triumph in the AFC Futsal Championship 2010.

The Asian futsal powerhouse sealed their 10th continental title in 11 years with an 8-3 victory over hosts Uzbekistan in the final at the Uzbekistan Sports Complex in Tashkent back in May, while Japan took third with a 6-1 hammering of China.

AFC and FIFA Executive Committee member Junji Ogura, who is also the Chairman of the Organising Committee for AFC Youth Competitions, presented the award to Iran's head of futsal Abbas Torabian.

Torabian said: “It was completely clear from the beginning that we would win it. We have after all won the title 10 times out of 11.

“Now we have to do what I promised on the stage: get into the final of the FIFA Futsal World Cup with Brazil. We have to do this for Asia as the continent’s representative.”

Torabian said Iran’s dominance was not surprising.

“We have three teams – U19, U23 and the senior team. So we have a steady supply of players,” said Torabian, who felt Iran’s superiority could only spur others to better their performance.

Thanks Amir, the Futsal is right now our confidence balancer, although we have been nr 4 since 1994.
A litte light in the present darkness are we thanful for anyway.
I think its definitly unfair that Zob got nothing from this award thing. It just shows one more time how political even the football industry has become. And how bi orze our rish o pashmis are.

Nader jan Bin Hammel has no other choice to give us awards in Futsal but trust me if it's 50/50 in any other award they will give it to an Arab team or an east Asian team over Iran any day of the week. This is why people who know what's going on think that the A in AFC stands for Arab and we all know how much they love us.

This is all fair. Iran's football team has failed big time within the recent years. We wil have to wait for another Azizi-Daei-Bagheri-Kia miracle which may happen in another 20 years. Iran's infrastructure in football is way behind even some Arab coutries like Saudi.

However, as the AFC player of the year I still think that Shojai deserved to be in the short list. I wonder why he was not included.
