I know when you read the title you must have clicked on it to bash this thread.
Now let me explain to you through history and knowledge why we have a better chance to win it then Australia or Japan.
1. Look at history
How did Iraq win the last one.
They had motivation from their country to represent them to the best of their ability to show the world that Iraq is closing onto stability with the US hands in their country.
The country was lifted by that accomplishment.
Now in Iran we have the green movement to take the out the I.R.
Every Iranian player knows about the happenings in Iran which will inspire them to win.
Now when we win, it will string together riots and could take out the I.R.
Our players will play for the people who died in Iran and will make us proud.
I wouldn't be surprised if the MVP in the tournament was from Iran.
You may see a player, who you never knew could perform at that level, just blow away the competition.
I'm thinking that may be Karimi... Leading to my next point.
2. Heroes
Karimi.... Daei..... Hashemian..... Mahdavikia..... Azizi..... Parvin.....
You here these names and you can recall a goal, assist, tackle, cross that every Iranian fan would remember.
Now that our football is in such a bad state, I have a good feeling that one of our heroes will give his last breath to TM and solidify himself forever in TM history as one of the best.
I am thinking Karimi will volunteer to comeback and give us more memories to remember.
He will see that he still has something to offer and he will comeback for sure.
I dunno about Mahdavikia or Hashemian but I wouldn't be surprised if they wanted to also be invited back.
3. Coach
Now I don't think Ghotbi should be TM coach, but we gotta live with it.
I think by the time we get to the Asian Cup he would have had enough experience and knowledge with the players to know what to do in the situation.
I know you guys saw hes a computer freak and I believe that also but, I think he uses this 1 striker formation to find out the best strikers individually that can be put together to work great together.
Thus, he uses it.
If he changed it right now to 2 strikers everyone would see the potential of our strikers thus he could be hiding it.
Now, this thread should not be used as a fun thread but a more serious and intelligent one.
I hope you guys understand me and not be putting TM so down.

Although I dont think that Karimi will ever play for team melli again,
I think that there is a good chance of winning the title with gheyrat
let us see what the future brings

we could if we manage to find some decent central defenders... for years we've been suffering from this and no one seems to care... if Ghotbi manages to fix this liability then i think we have enough offensive power to make it to the final... i was not impressed by Qatar to be honest... they won fair and square but they were very very lucky... same thing with Mali they didn't impress at all and just got a result...
the result we got out of these two games was that our defensive problems are know very well known and ghotbi can focus on this for now... i'd say that's a very valuable lesson to take with us out of this tournament
I like the optimistic attitude of pawford and I wish I had the same dosage , but frankly , it is nothing more than a wishful thinking,,,
Say,,,what is this "Ghyrat" thing that many Iranians seems to think of as doing wonders to the extent of winning Championships ? So , you think other teams are "Bi-Ghyrat" or what?
Other teams , specially the Arabs are 10 times more motivated than Iranians for the simple fact that the financial rewards given to each player is something that Iranians can only dream of.
Anyway , no matter how "Ba-Ghyrat" a player or a team is , there is no substitute for skill & tactics on the pitch.

It's football and you never know. predicting football is never clear and sure. I hope (after what I saw in the last two games) that we will have a good squad within 2 years which will be much better than what we had in 1996.
Asian cup 1996 was actually the same case and no one believed in our squad. I remember I knew we were loosing to Iraq before the game started and in one game, JUST IN ONE GAME against Saudi Arabia, we played a good match and everything started since then. Azizi became the best player of asia, Daei had a good contract in UAE, and ...
It's definitely for 90% about motivation. Look at North Korea as the biggest example. They really can't play football and the never desereved to go to WC, but they did win their last games because of the motivation they got, tnx to their southern brothers helping them go to WC.
Also about the financial fact that Maij was mentioning: Our players are very good financed comparing with our players in 1996!

right, gheyrat was probably the main thing that helped us earn at least a draw at SK...!! but to actually WIN tourneys like AC or WCQ, you need much more than just Gheyrat..!!

We have been relying on this mythical notion of "gheyrat" for so long that I think we have forgotten, all together, that gheyrat alone is not going do anything for us.
Simply implying that gheyrat is something that only Iranians are blessed with is not wise at all... do you think that other teams, when stepping in the field are like "ahhhh, F it, lets just scratch our balls and smoke J???"
We should wake up and forget about this "ba gheyrat" "bi gheyrat" mozakhrafat. Every player, no matter where in the world he/she is, is honored to play for his/her national team, and will give his/her 100%, just like our boys do for TM.
Do we have what it takes to win AC? NO we dont, and we wont win it. Very simple. Now do we want to be optimistic, dilusional or realistc? I think we have been the first two for a very long time and the result: utter disappointment in the end.
How about being realistic for a while?
1- Our coach is garbage
2- Our league is garbage
3- Our so-called legioners play in garbage leagues (except for 2 of them)
4- The whole system that runs our football is garbage
result: garbage * 4 = garbage
now my friend, if you add a bunch of sh!t together and produce diamonds then you are, I dont know, not from this world maybe!

Khoda is dahanet beshnaveh..
If they topple I wouldnt care if TM looses every match for the next 10 years.
At least our people will once again befree and proud.

Australia will win the AC 2011. I predict a 2nd or 3rd place finish for Iran.

Iran srsly need to be in the top 4 in the upcoming asian cup to show Asia we are still a elite team/
if we dont succeed in the Asian cup i say we kick out every player over 23 in TM, and build a team from scratch for the 2014 WC/

Iran has plenty of gheyrat, still and tactics however scarce...
So it wont depend on our gheyrat to win the AC.

if we qualify, then we can talk about avoiding a last place in our group which is:
Mongolia
Hong Kong
Afghanistan
