The highly talented Iranian footballer, Ali Karimi , has quietly celebrated his 100 appearances for Team Melli in the thrilling encounter against Uzbekistan in AFC Asian Cup 2007 in Malaysia with a narrow 2-1 win for his team.
Ali Karimi made his debut shortly after the 1998 World Cup, when he was selected for a friendly game against Kuwait. It was evident from the first moments when Karimi started juggling the ball , that Iran is on the brink of introducing a star player with exceptional ball handling ability.
At the time Karimi has just transferred from unknown team “Fath” to the most popular club in Iran , Persepolis officially known as Piruzi. Young Karimi soon became a household name on his first official tournament where he helped Iran win the Asian Games 1998 Gold Medal in Bangkok. At the time , The teams representing their respective countries were full teams rather than the present system of restricting players age to under 23 years.
In the post World Cup 1998 and the relative success of Iranian football, the domestic league was on a revival. The introduction of a professional league meant large sum of money being exchanged for players transfers. But the grand prize went to Dubai as the hawk-eyed scouts from the United Arab Emirates quickly pounced on Persepolis most valuable asset and lured him to Al Ahli Club. Ali Karimi and Persepolis were offered quite a lucrative deal that was extremely hard to refuse. Karimi was snapped by Al Ahli club and it took him very little time to become the Idol of the fans and TV viewers alike with his silky skills and dribbling prowess.
Two seasons ago , Karimi joined Bayern Munich on a free transfer , to become the 3rd Iranian player to place for the famous German champion. Karimi had difficult acclimatizing with the German way of life and a mixture of language problem , injuries and loss of form , meant that he did not perform as well as expected.
Ali Karimi has returned back to the Gulf where he will be playing for Qatar club the coming season.
