In quest of Championship
Asian Cup 2007
TeamMelli.com Reporting from Kuala Lumpur
Report no: 3

It was another hard long day in Asian Cup 2007, filled with suspense and stress, however the better team prevailed and I could virtually hear the sigh of relief by millions of Team Melli fan across the globe after the match finishing 2-1 for Team Melli..

Let me start by the News conference, though. The moment Amir Ghalenoei saw me, he jokingly said “ For God sake please don’t ask me any questions?.”
Mr. Ghalenoei , of course was referring to the question I asked and the warning I gave yesterday morning in the pre-match conference. I spoke of his temper and if he would control it during this championship matches. Call it a hunch or prophecy, somehow I thought , at times, this young aspiring coach is too temperamental perhaps inexperienced to face the heat and he could lose control of his temper at a crucial moment….. He lost his temper and was sent off by the Kuwaiti referee Saad Kameel.!!!!!!!!
This episode between me and Ghalenei was a hot topic in the press room for a while.

However , my question to him this time was about how his star players let him down and let the team and the fans down as well, while the less famous player like Javad Kazemian , played splendidly and scored the winner. Will he re-consider the line up for the next match?

Mr. Ghalenoei diplomatically answered by saying that all star players have their good days and their bad days. And like he always does , he gives examples , this time he mentioned Ronladinho who had his bad day near the end of the La Liga with Barcelona and was sent off. So, it is quite expected, as Ghalemnoei claims that star players don’t shine at some stages.

Of course I and many other journalists , were far from convinced with this answer but there was no room for further discussion which renders some of these press conferences as a bit useless for the media.

The problem with this approach is that the coach (and the players) will always have a readily available non-disputable justification for defeat. Surely every team in the world is beaten, isn’t it more prudent and productive to study and analyze the mistakes and gaps in the team rather than excuse yourself by saying “Brazil has also lost ????”
I also commented on why Javad Kazemian looks so sad and upset sitting in front of us with his coach. He hardly smiled or exchanged eye contact with anybody. This question amused many people who started laughing and changed the atmosphere. Ghalenoei for the record told me (Jokingly of course in Farsi ) that Javad perhaps is not satisfied with his prize money as Player of the Match !!

The match itself was split into two different scenarios. The first half was quite appalling as far as Iranian team goes. A 3 man forward line ? and including in that not-so-successful pair Enayati & Khatibi ??? What was Mr. Ghalenoei thinking about ??? As predicted this line up was nothing short of a bad dream , but worsen by the fact that the midfield was disappointing , slow , poor feeding the forwards and ineffective. Add to that , the customary Mr. Rahman. Rezaei fault of the championship, and the 1-0 result for the Uzbeks was not far from logical or reasonable.

To give credit to the Uzbeks , their defensive system was rock solid as they based it on defending from deep midfield positions. They hardly let Nekounam , Teymourian and Karimi any breathing space. It was an exemplary defensive system that worked to perfection in the first half. Team Melli did not have any real scoring chances or shoots to trouble the goalkeeper in this half.

But the final laugh went to Team Melli coach Amir Ghalenoei. He saw the team fault and pulled out Khatibi to replace him with Kazemian. It looked that young Javad was on a mission, and the rest as they say is history. His splendid runs , crosses , amazing pace , durability and to cap it all , a beautifully taken goal spoke volume about this player’s capabilities. This was Javad Kazemian’s match and his goal was a fitting finale for the man who changed the fortunes of the team.

A special praise must also awarded to Seyed Jalal Hosseini , who was towering above the rest , clearing his area and sweeping anything that passed his fellow defenders. He hardly put a foot wrong and he also scored a beautiful equalizer.
A well deserved win for Team Melli , and it is not going to be easy against Chine.

Nice report as expected nothing less than perfect from Mr. Majid Panahi.

A comment for our stars' performance, however this is not an excuse by any means:

It's too hard to motivate a player who shines in Europe, plays in front of tens of thousands spectators against/with world class players such as Ronaldiniho, Totti, Henry and Ballak to put 100% in a humid, warm, empty stadium against a team no one even heard about their players and in a tournament barely impact any news even in its finale, without any prize.

We all know it's a national team and an honor to play, but this trick works only for a few starting caps. After all they are all young and lack of experience, they think they will be young for ever.

As a coach, it's a "mission impossible" to either bench such a player or motivate him fully. any solution for that? I doubt.

Cheers,

AFCasiancup.com reports that:

"Ghalanoei was sent-off from the bench with six minutes remaining by Kuwaiti referee Saad Kameel Al Fadhli after throwing a water bottle at the fourth official."

Did he really throw a water bottle? Hahahaha he really has a temper.

Ghalanoei disputes this, however.

“It was just something that happened in the game. At that time, I was very angry with one of my players who had lost the ball easily and I shouted at him,” said Ghalanoei, who became the second coach to be disciplined in the tournament following the dismissal of Qatar coach Dzemaludin Musovic against Japan on Monday.

“But the referee thought that I was complaining about him so that’s why he sent me off.”

Of course you have a valid point about atmosphere & motivation.

I must admit that personally when I stepped into this huge magnificent stadium and saw nothing but empty seats , bar a few hundred Iranians in the middle and similar numbers of Uzbeks and a smaller group of Iranians on the grandstand , it was just a shocking disappointment.

Last Iran match I attended was in Frankfurt in the World Cup against Portugal. In Frankfurt , even before stepping inside the Arena , I was electrified by the atmosphere ....when I entered the stadium , the whole place felt absolutely outstanding , beautiful superb and touching . It is a feeling that is very difficult to explain in detail. It is an event that one must personally experience to understand its true value.

Great feeling of Persian pride ran in my veins immediately ...I was shell shocked with joy when I saw tens of thousands of Persians & Iranians waving the flag and shouting IRAN...IRAN...in unison. I was so taken by the occasion that tears started to form in my eyes. I I momentarily stood there in awe at this grand scene with emotions overcoming me as I stared at these huge crowds, until one of the ushers politely asked me to move on. This sort of moments, you never forget in a lifetime.......

...on the other extreme , you have an empty stadium in KL...very true..it is difficult to get motivated , but for a professional player , there is no excuse as the job has to be done.

I have not missed many Team Melli matches in the last 30 years...however , I missed the Mexico match cause it was 4 in the morning....Even a die hard fan like me had a difficult time adjusting as I had a very busy schedule next working day ( in fact while the match was still on, I had to be on duty)

I have been asked by several reporters on why Amir Ghalenoei was dissmissed (!) I told whoever asked me , that I did not see the incident as I was busy typing on my laptop keyboard at the time it occured.

Surprisingly , one of the reporter who actually asked me about the incident , reported that GHalnoei threw a water bottle at the 4th official !!!!!!

I find that a bit strange , and I will ask this reporter where he got his facts from, when I see him next time. He stays in the same hotel.

I think it was because we need Hashemian for the next games and we are not sure about the other guy yet.

I think it was because we need Hashemian for the next games and we are not sure about the other guy yet.

I hope that was the case too. I am glad VH was taken out when he was,.. but then again now that we have won , I can say it easier...

however, giving Enayatee a chance by taking out VH in the first game of the tournament while we were tied with about 15 or 20 minutes to go,.. I don't know, but I call that a gutsy call.. why would he take that chance?

We may very well tie China and that's when this win against Uzbek becomes such big win.. and that move will seem even gutsier..

kholaseh az bikheh goosheh GN gozasht.. (and of course us too)..
