At last, the worst of our fears materialized. All international Iranian football activities were suspended by FIFA on Thursday 23rd Nov. 2006 with an immediate impact on Iran’s Olympic team exclusion from defending its title in Doha 2006 Asian Games.
The suspension was activated by FIFA after Iranian federation and authorities refused to act or dragged its feet in meeting FIFA’s demands. The international Organizing body has warned Iran as far as August this year of the consequences of the government meddling in football affairs in Iran. The case started with the Ministry of Sport in Iran (known as Sazman Tarbiyat Badani ) through its president AliAbadi , ordering the sacking of the board of governance of the IFF including its president Mohammed Dadkan citing unsatisfactory or poor results in the FIFA World Cup 2006!.
Regardless of the FIFA mandate and regulation, the sacking of Dadkan seems unlawful, unjustified and groundless. No where in Iran’s football laws is there a mandate which involves the Government supervision and authority in any shape, hence the sackings were illegitimate. However one looks at this event , there is plenty evidence of organizational failure and injustice which stems from the acute lack of professionalism and proper conduct by Tarbiyat Badani.
Sacking of a person in any organization is an extreme last resort measure and must be supported by evidence of gross negligence, theft, fraud and other serious offences. For performance related issues, or failure to achieve the objectives, disciplinary action is normally taken rather than sacking. In Dadkan’s case none of the so-called violations have occurred. There was no publicly announced objective given to IFF or its president on what is required from the team to achieve in Germany, so on what criteria was IFF and Dadakan were judged upon and subsequently sacked?
The major question, however, revolves around the authority that questions the IFF president.
The Government, through Sazman Tarbiyat Badani has no legal power and authority in questioning the board of governance of the football federation. In essence what Mr. Ali Abadi has done is totally illegal in every sense, unless there is a by-law in Iranian law that allows the government to yield power in NGO such as Football federation. Such written law will indeed consider Iran’s membership in FIFA as void, as it contravene with international law governing football.
As expected , the self-defense mechanism of the government personnel who have been the reason for banning Iran , will turn this FIFA’s decision into political propaganda tool accusing the organization of being part of the grand conspiracy to destabilize the Islamic government and spoil the reputation of this devout Islamic regime. The question that will however engage millions of die-hard Iranian football fans , is who is accountable for this fiasco and how will it be solved ?
This case will uncover personnel with the poor handling skills that resulted in this embarrassing situation. In contrary, the clever technique and sheer brilliance of the government personnel who are handling the nuclear issue with international organizations, is evidence that there are indeed skilful personnel in Iran.. It is just pitiful that those who are handling football affairs do not have the knowledge and acute skills of their counterpart in the nuclear energy commission. .
Simply , If Iran government does not accept FIFA laws , and considers that setting such regulations regarding football is an infringement of domestic laws or interference in internal affairs of the Islamic Republic , then it should have alerted or declared those findings to FIFA as unacceptable. There would have either been a compromise (which is highly unlikely considering previous cases with other countries) or Iran would have been excluded from FIFA’s membership which means Iran will not be part of International football community and Iran’s IRIFF subsequently must face the wrath of the masses. But accepting FIFA’s regulations and claiming that they fully understand it as declared by one Nasserizadeh (a referee’s committee member and former head,) and then ignoring it , is nothing but incompetence , violation and failure .
In essence , those hundred of thousand fans who attend Azadi matches and the millions fans world wide care less who is playing politics , who is heading IFF or who is heading Tarbiyat Badani . It is the players and teams that they care about and the tolerance of those fans will be really tested if a compromise or a solution is not reached to enable Iranian teams back in international arena. Fans are more knowledgeable and have access to wide resources of news and views which makes it difficult for the authorities to mislead them into submission. It is very apparent where the sympathy of the Iranian fans lies……..
