PFDC - DAMASCUS, With half of this international week's task completed by snatching a point from Korea thanks to Vahid Hashemian's last minute goal in Seoul, Team Melli will at least have to get another point from Damascus on Wednesday (19:30 Tehran Time).
While a draw would maintain the one-point-distance to chasing Syria, only a win would put Iran in a very comfortable position ahead of the last two matches of Asian Cup qualification.
Iran boss Amir Ghalenoei already confirmed his team will appear in a more offensive 3-5-2 formation in Syria's capital. There are no personell changes compared to the match in Korea expected, however, Ali Karimi will be ordered upfront to support Hashemian in attack. Mehrzad Madanchi could appear in a more offensive role than the other midfielders, which occassionally could transform the formation into a 3-4-3.
Team Melli's biggest problem is the tiredness of the players though. After a very long journey from Seoul to Damascus with stops in Beijing and Tehran, the players are very exhausted and only could participate in a light training on Monday. Ghalenoei is hopeful to improve his men's physical fitness in the final training session on Tuesday.
Should Iran win this crucial match, a win against Chinese Taipei, regardless of the result against Korea in Tehran, would be enough to qualify, however, a loss in Syria would make a premature Iranian exit from the Asian Cup campaign likely.
Syria - Iran
Asian Cup Qualifier, Group B, Damascus, 19:30 Tehran Time
Iran's probable lineup: Mirzapour - Nosrati, Fekri, Rezaei - Mahdavikia, Teymourian, Nekounam, Madanchi, Nikbakht - Karimi, Hashemian
I don't know about you, but i don't think putting karimi as a forward is a wise choice-have you seen his finishes? Did you see them in the game against korea?

Ali Karimi is going to play his position and he is best to play there. He is not going to be a striker. Forwards are either strikers or playmakers. If you want to see karimi dribble he has to get there and play one on one or one on two encounters with the last defensive line. Ghalenoi is doing the right thing because Ali Karimi at his best was not playing in midfield.

Ghalenoei confirmed that on IRIB yesterday.
I think it's not bad. I always liked him in attack. The attacking third is where his dribblings are needed most and where turnovers are not so dangerous. He is quite a good goalscorer, despite he's not a real goalgetter.
As said, I am also sure he's not gonna remain upfront strictly like Hash all the time.

I cant wait to see him Up front he will be a lethal due with hash, dont forget hash is not a pacy striker, he needs a setup man who can take a player or two off of him. karimi has all the skills nessacary to be that man. AK JOOON:D

good points....
in light of no clear second forward option for the new coach...karimi should do well uptop as a provider to hashemian..just a little deeper uptop than his normal position....and this guy is badly in need of a morale boost and a couple goals should get him back on track..
Not Niki ..the headless chicken

Such a terrible idea. Karimi cannot finish in the way in which a natural born striker can and he refuses to pass when he is close to goal. To top it off he has been off form. In addition with Karimi as a striker tm has no playmaker to destribute the ball and create offensive opportunities.

Meanwhile it seems he changed his mind, as Karimi is supposed to play behind Enayati and Hashemian according to the most recent reports.
This Ghalenoei is a bit confusing. Monday he says 3-5-2 with Karimi upfront, Tuesday he announces a 3-4-3 system while on matchday he announces 3-5-2 with Karimi as offensive mf.

He's best as a winger or wide forward. Or even in Nekounams position. Any role which allows him to freely make passes and runs. Where he is now, he'll be trampled, although if anyone can get out of a tight spot its him.
I would like to see what he can do with 2 strikers ahead of him though. Maybe he can shine, I'm counting on it.
One thing I love are those sneaky passes around the box, where a striker can sneak right behind the line and the playmaker can make a no look pass on to his path. Like a Deco, Messi, Azizi type play. I don't see Karimi capable of that...Shojaei yes.
