Hi all,

I am just new here and I was wondering if someone could give me a brief summary of persian soccer. Which are best teams, players, coaches? Who to follow?

Kind regards from Amsterdam (the Netherlands)

Iranian football became famous in the 70s for ruling the continent for a decade, winning 3 Asian Cups and appearing in the WC in Argentina where they tied with a (back then) strong Scotland.

The revolution and the 8 years of war caused football to be forgotten in Iran but late in the 80s, Iranians began to construct their football from scratch.

The result was a young and powerful team in 1996 Asian Cup which progressed to qualify for the 1998 WC and beat the U.S in France. Star players like Mahdavikia,Daie,Azizi,Bagheri,Abedzadeh,Minavand,E stili,Peyrovani and... were some of the best players Iran has ever seen.

From that point, Iran's football exported talents to Europe, increased their league standards (and introduced the new professional league), and football became a nationwide passion once again.

Iran were unlucky not to qualify for the 2002 WC, after a notorious loss againts Bahrain and a 2-1 aggregate playoff defeat againts Ireland, eventhough they had a good team and they had invested alot in their 2002 squad.

In the Busan Asan games, Iran played with a young and talented team and surprised everyone by winning the tournament under coach Branko Ivankovic. That team now makes the skeleton of the national team today. Players like Alavi,Kabi,Mobali,Kazemian,Nekonam,Nosrati,Navidki a,Madanchi from the Busan games and other league stars like Shojaie,Sadeghi,Enayati,Khatibi,Manaie,Shakori,Tal ebloo,Roudbarian,Vaezi,Golmohamadi,Bakhtiyarizadeh ,Jabbari
plus the addition of some foreign based players: Karimi,Mahdavikia,Rezaie,Zandi and Hashemian make up the Iranian squad for the 2006 WC.

Star players of Iran in Germany will be their foreign based players as well as talents like Kaebi, Jabbari, Shojaie, Nekonam and their 37 year old goal scorer Ali Daie who is the best goal scorer in the history of football with more than 110 national goals.

Iran's main problem is in their goal and their left defense. They have a strong right wing.

As for the Iranian league, The two giants: Esteghlal (known as the blues) and Persepolis (known as the Reds) have dominated Iran's football both at domestic and Asian level but in the recent years, teams Like Sepahan, Foolad, Saba and PAS have won titles as well and balanced out the success Perspolis and Esteghlal usually enjoyed.

Esteghlal Tehran are the reigning IPL Champions, and arguably the best team.

It must be said that Persepolis/Pirouzi FC have a glorious history, and have a plethora of talent, which they have not been able to utilize fully this season. Definitely a team with great potential. The introduction of Arie Haan(ex China National team coach, and a great player in his day) has proven to be a well calculated move, which has been beneficial to the team.

These two clubs are the most popular, as they are both based in Tehran, the most populated city in Iran.

Mehdi Mahdavikia, Vahid Hashemian and Ali Karimi are probably the best Iranian players. All, coincidentally, are attacking players. Fereydoon Zandi, although having passed a difficult season at Kaiserslautern, is a very skillful player, with a great shot, and vision.

Rahman Rezaei is also a notable mention in defence.

Ali Daei is the poster boy(although the term 'boy' may be redundant; he is now 37!) of Iranian football, and leads the all-time International goal scoring charts, from Puskas and Pele.

Young talent to look out for include Hossein Kaabi, Arash Borhani, Jabbari, Iman Mobali, Masoud Shojaei, Mehrdad Madanchi, Javad Kazemian and Andranik Teymourian to name a few. Many of these players are on the verge of national team selection, or have been included.

That's a basic overview of our best players, upcoming talent and clubs.

All you need to know is....

Esteghlal (blue) overall is the best team and will always remain SARVARE Piroozi(Red) even though they have all the money and political power

EsTeghlal is like the underdog that always wins over the favorite and they even let the REDS slide like this year when they pulled out of the Hazfi Cup

;) :D

Let me tell you about The club Perspolis aka Pirouzi aka Soorakhors
They are one of irans most weakest teams that have managed to get lucky every now and then and become the champions, although they are no match for their rivals Esteghlal they think they are.

One more thing to mentioned regarding Esteghlal is that they have a great obsession with the number 6. Its as if one hole in their bodies is not enough so they want to add another 5 , to make it SH SH SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESHTAYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEYASH: 6. And the other thing is that Iran is schedualed to meet the country that you reside in (Netherlands) in the second round.

Thank you and Peace out.

another noteworthy thing about esteghlal is their devotion to god and especially the current regime...you can see them celebrate every important victory by lining up in the pitch and doing what is called NAMAZ:bow:  ;)

AND outside of all the hype of about the red and blue....
for the best iran football you need to look for the men in black, in a greatest team called the ABU MOSLEM...where all the hard-asses play and beat the crap(litterally:D ) out of all other teams in so called Iranian Professional League, even if the score boad might read otherwise.

And

the most important and historic game in our history was a 6-0 WIN by Perspolees against Esteghlal (which was called Taj then).;) And you must choose between them if you want to be part of the Iranian football fan. :)

....and the other thing you need to know about Iranian soccer is that the thing you see in the opponents 18 which our players bounce the ball off of, is not a pole it is our senior citizen center escapee (former legend) ali Daei.

Also that Zareh is our star player, and also esteghlal's other name is ShishLool. thank you for your attention to our country's soccer and see you in the second round.

somereal facts here 123soccer

irans 2 biggest soccer clubs are
esteghlal (blue) & perspolis (red)

while perspolis has won 2 or 3 more iranian cups,
esteghlal is the most prestigious club in asia as a whole!

they have won the asian cup twice(the highest any asian club has achieved in history), reached the finals 4 times(again highest any asian club has achievedc in history) and the semis if i remember correctly around 7 times (again the higest any asian club has done in history). perspolis hasnt won any asian championsg cup and their best achievement is a 3rd place. they have however won the asian cup winners cup (u can comapre to ti UEFA cup in europe) once.

face to face, esteghlal has beaten perspolis around 17 times while perspolis has beaten esteghlal around 13 times.

however perspolis once beat esteghlal 6-0, thats the biggest scoreline by which perspolis have won decades ago(and whenever u ask them about perspolis achievements, this is all they can come up  and will ever boast about for th enext 758943758943759843789543 century cos thye got nothing anyelse to boast about ;) ) while esteghlal's biggest scoreline vicotry was 3-0 against perspolis.

in the early 90's, esteghlal relegated to 3rd division once, but some people say it was some political move. anywayz, they came back to first division and won the title again the same year they got promoted.

perspolis players have had more successful careers in europe than esteghlals, namely daei, karimi, bagheri and mahdavikia are more popular than mousavi, pashazadeh, yazdani, majidi (although many of these players, from both teams never started their football from these 2 clubs, but were bought from other clubs). however, even with all these stars perspolis had, they failed to forget winning but even reach 1 finals of an asian cup

perspolis is said to have a bigger fanbase than esteghlal, and some say its the highest in asia, and only clubs like dalian shinde of china and al hilal of saudi arabia have this many number of fans.

now its upto u to decide which team u wanna support, whether u wanna have a good taste and prove u hav a good knowledge of football and talk about continental glories, cups and prestige by choosing ESTEGHLAL  or choosing a team who can only talk about a single game scoreline which happened decades ago and nothing elseby choosing perspolis :nono:
