2006 FIFA World Cup final draw: TV coverage to be broadcast in 145 countries
17 November 2005
by OC 2006 FIFA World Cup
The list of 32 qualified countries for the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ is now complete. The eyes of the footballing world will now be turning to Leipzig, which will host the draw for the final phase on 9 December 2005, setting the course for how the tournament will unfold in sporting terms.
Worldwide media event
The draw for the final phase is attracting enormous interest among the media. More than 150 television and radio stations across 145 countries have applied for broadcasting rights. It is expected that 320 million viewers worldwide will follow the ceremony. There will be 120 commentary positions in the exhibition hall, with 850 national and international television and radio journalists from 55 countries reporting live, via delayed telecast or on individual sections of the proceedings.
As well as the major German networks, internationally reputed broadcasters such as RAI (Italy), BBC (England), TV Globo (Brazil), ABC and ESPN (USA), Televisa Mexiko (Mexico) and TF1 (France) will all be present. More "exotic" countries will also be represented, such as Georgia, Indonesia, Peru and Venezuela. The official worldwide feed will be provided by ARD, as commissioned by HBS (Host Broadcast Services), who are FIFA’s host broadcasters for the FIFA World Cup. Added to this will be some 800 journalists and photographers from the written press, 600 of them from abroad.
Dramatic final draw process with high-profile stars
The high-point of the ceremony, which is being produced for ARD by Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR), is of course the final draw, which is scheduled to take place between 9.20 - 9.50pm and last around 30 minutes. It will be organised by FIFA Communications Director Markus Siegler, and will see the 32 participating countries drawn into eight groups of four teams.
To conduct the draw, FIFA has nominated at least one star player from each of the footballing continents. They will be ambassadors for their “confederations” as well as representing the FIFA World Cup history in their respective continents.
First class TV production from ARD
The final draw ceremony will be part of an international gala which combines football and entertainment. The top musical act of the evening is Colombian rock star and winner of 12 Latin Grammy Awards Juanes, whose summer hit "La Camisa Negra" was a world-wide success, making him the number one male artist on the latino music scene. Home country Germany will be providing a short film by internationally renowned director and huge football fan Wolfgang Becker (of "Good bye Lenin!" fame), which will combine football fanaticism with the growing anticipation ahead of the FIFA World Cup™.
Exciting clips from classic FIFA World Cup encounters will also be featured, whilst Hans Klok – the “fastest magician in the world“ – will dazzle the public with a quick-fire illusion show using the symbols of the FIFA World Cup. The "Young German Philharmonic", which brings together 84 of the country’s most talented music students, will be performing their own selected orchestral arrangements of works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Richard Strauss.
Talk-show host and sports presenter Reinhold Beckmann and supermodel Heidi Klum (DPA Photo) will moderate the 90-minute final draw ceremony, which will be broadcast world-wide from 8.30pm. Former German FIFA World Cup star Günter Netzer and top sports journalist Gerhard Delling will be discussing the event on German television from 8.15pm and, in a tried and tested format, analysing the draw from a footballing point of view at the end of the show.
A busy week
Appointments, meetings, press conferences, the official FIFA banquet, a media party with the theme "A time to make friends in Leipzig"… all these are in store for guests of the final draw in the week from 5-9 December. The first FIFA delegates, representatives of national associations and members of the press will be flying in from around the world to the Leipzig Congress Center from 9.00am on 3 December, when the accreditation booth opens.
The most important body in world football will also be convening in Leipzig – the FIFA Executive Committee. The procedure for the draw will officially be published on 6 December after a meeting of the FIFA Organising Committee for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, chaired by Vice President Lennart Johansson.

From Honorary President of FIFA Joao Havelange and FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter, through the Presidents of the Confederations down to current and past footballers from around the world – they will all be coming to the Congress Centre in Saxony.
Federal President Horst Köhler will be present as a high-level representative of German politics, whilst Chancellor designate Angela Merkel and former SPD party chairman Franz Müntefering, Prime Minister of Saxony Georg Milbradt and Governing Mayor of Berlin Klaus Wowereit will also be attending.
All 32 participating national team coaches should be there, including Jürgen Klinsmann (Germany), Sven-Göran Eriksson (England), Marco van Basten (The Netherlands), Marcello Lippi (Italy), Zico (Japan), Oleg Blochin (Ukraine) and Luiz Felipe Scolari (Portugal).
The German football family, namely representatives of the German Football League (DFL), the 36 first and second division Bundesliga clubs, the 12 FIFA World Cup host cities and venues as well as the German FA (DFB) and its state associations, will be represented by, amongst others, DFB Chairman Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder, Managing DFB Chairman Dr Theo Zwanziger, DFL Chairman Werner Hackmann and the majority of the Lord Mayors of the FIFA World Cup host cities.
Leipzig looking forward
According to Lord Mayor Wolfgang Tiefensee, the city of Leipzig will be "dynamic, friendly and enthusiastic" during the final draw in the first week in December, which will have "seamless organisation, a punchy programme of events and a lot of emotion." The FIFA World Cup office in the city has apparently prepared, with input from local partners and creative staff, a number of "surprises" for participants, media representatives and the local community, including a honky-tonk pub festival special on 9 December, a media brunch in Leipzig’s Zentralstadion (8 December from 10.00am-12.00pm), the FIFA Executive Dinner in the old town hall on 7 December as well as a programme based around the Christmas market with later opening hours on certain days.

Does anyone know if the decision of which countries go into which pot (A,B,C,D)
is made the same day just prior to the draw or in advance? If in advance,
when is that decision made?

zeerak, I think any team would be challanging for Iran.
We can be confident that Iran will have a glorious World Cup.
Maybe the best so far no matter which sides we face in the 1st round.

I only hope we can do as well as the potential we have, that is, if Branko does not screw it up!
